Warren Symphony Awarded $5,000 Grant from The General Motors Foundation

Warren, MI

The Warren Symphony Orchestra has been named a recipient of a $5,000 grant from the General Motors Foundation.

The official announcement will be made at the GM Foundation grant presentation on Friday, August 10.  GM and UAW leadership along with elected officials and community leaders will attend the event.  The WSO, which will announce its 40th Anniversary Season later this month, will use the funding for general operations.

Warren Symphony Society President Myrle Hughes said, “The WSO is extremely glad to have the GM Foundation back as a financial supporter after a hiatus of a few years.  The Warren Symphony and GM Foundation are both integral components of Warren and the Greater Macomb County area, making it a better place to work, to play, and to live.  These funds will go into our general operating fund, and will support the 5 public concert events of the upcoming 2012/2013 season as well as the annual Youth Concerts in which introduce more than 2,000 elementary students to classical music.

The WSO is in its 40th season serving the tri-county area. Dr. Gregory Cunningham directs the orchestra, which is made up of up to 65 professional musicians. The group performs a broad spectrum of music from traditional classical pieces, to works that blur the line between classical and contemporary.

“The Warren Symphony Orchestra provides an invaluable service to the community of southeastern Michigan” says Vivian Pickard, president of the GM Foundation.  “Not only are families exposed to the sounds of this outstanding orchestra, they also witness great international performers such as Ani and Ida Kavafian, dance companies such as Eisenhower Dance Ensemble and the Kyiv Ballet, and popular attractions such as P.D.Q. Bach, Corky Siegel, and Robert Goulet.  We are proud to support the WSO.”

Since its inception in 1976, the GM Foundation has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to American charities, educational organizations and to disaster relief efforts worldwide. The GM Foundation focuses on supporting Education, Health and Human Services, Environment and Energy and Community Development initiatives, mainly in the communities where GM operates.
